Julia Martin fully qualified as a chartered and state registered physiotherapist in 1980. Since 1985, she has been a Category A Member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy (ACPAT). Julia has always been very keen in developing physiotherapy for animals, working in conjunction with veterinary surgeons. Up until 1990 whilst the animal therapy work was developing, Julia worked within the NHS where she held a senior physiotherapst position. To continue her skills in treating people, she works within The Goring Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic. Julia is a member of Physio First (an organisation for chartered physiotherapists in private
practice) and due to her great interest in pain management she is a member of the Physiotherapy Pain Association (PPA).
Veterinary surgeons have referred to Julia since 1983 - regarding equine and small animal neuroorthopaedic and sports performance referrals. She has always been passionate in developing and integrating small animal physiotherapy within the veterinary care team. In 2003, Julia joined the Grove Lodge veterinary team, and it has been excellent to see the growth of physiotherapy referrals for dogs and cats in helping owners.
Typical referrals are:- orthopaedic and neurological conditions. These can include spinal conditions, arthritic lameness problems (- including management and care for the more senior dog and cat), soft-tissue injuries, sports injuries, pre and post op cases. Julia also sees neurological conditions including spinal cord trauma or disease, and nerve trauma.
Julia’s treatment skills cover an extremely comprehensive range of manual and electro-therapy techniques, including laser therapy. In treatment sessions she also advises owners on how to improve their pet’s movement quality and functional fitness, with exercise-rehabilitation and home management techniques. Julia is passionate about how to continue improving the clinical development of musculoskeletal and neurological physiotherapy for dogs and cats, within the small
animal veterinary team and providing help and support for owners.
